Memphis Psychiatrist Dr. Melvin Levitch Reprimanded for Unethical Conduct

MEMPHIS, Tenn. According to a media release from the Tennessee Department of Health, Memphis psychiatrist Dr. Melvyn Levitch was reprimanded by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners in September 2013. This for unprofessional, dishonorable or unethical conduct and failing to follow board regulations which establish prerequisites for the issuance of prescriptions.

Dr. Melvyn Levitch graduated in 1959 from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. He interned at Mid-State Baptist Hospital (now Baptist Hospital) in Nashville, and did his residence at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute in Chicago (ISPI).

ISPI (the organization, as opposed to the building), was founded in 1907 as a collaboration between the state [of Illinois] and the university “as a clearing house for processing patients to the state hospitals,” according to the Encyclopedia of Chicago. Seriously disturbed patients were “contained” there. (Source)

Dr. Levitch’s office address is Delta Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. He is also associated with Nea Medical Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and four additional Memphis hospitals:

  • Baptist Memorial Hospital
  • Saint Francis Hospital
  • Methodist Hospital
  • Saint Francis Hospital

In response to his unethical conduct, the state board reprimanded his license with terms and assessed an $1800 civil penalty plus costs.
